3D Printed Architectural Column by Richard Beckett and Sam Welham
Part structural, part decorative, Stela is the next exploration in to architectural scale fabrication, presenting a strategy for architectural thinking within 3D printing by D-Shape UK. The geometry aims to utilise a novel but distinctly architectural language, with references to historic and neo-digital formal conditions. Despite having a defined aesthetic logic the column has a larger ambition – to reach architectural scales and disrupt the notion of 3D printing a prototype or to model scales.
The detail, formal proportions and surface complexity transitions vertically through three key logics, expressing a relationship to the four outlined conditions for fully-architectural ALM. The column is an eye-catching and largely sculptural element, with the role of design explored at 1:1 material and mechanical detail.
